Click for Larger Image Barris Merc During the growing California custom scene of the '50s, the Barris brothers pioneered the chopped Mercury look. This favorite car of customizers got the typical Barris touch with chopped top and slanted B-pillars. It was nosed and decked and lowered. Fitted with frenched headlights, Cadillac hubcaps, bubble skirts with teeth, and custom taillights. And finally finished off in the sweetest of Kandy Kolors. All trimmed out and ready to roll, any Barris Merc was a dare-to-be-different dream come true for Americas's car-crazy youth!

Unveiled in 1987 on the 10th anniversary of Elvis's death, this 1965 Eldorado Convertible started a national tour sponsored by E.P. Cosmetics. Fans admired its exterior with 40 coats of Gold Pearl and swirled Gold Leaf pinstriping. A look in side showed off the gold-plated steering wheel, gold-plated TV and phone, three gold Elvis 45s imbedded in the rear headrest, and guitar-shaped sunvisors for that extra touch of class!

It was chopped and converted to hardtop styling with sculptured chrome window frames housing all the side-glass for a signature Barris look. The front featured frenched headlights, floating grille and V-butted windshield. The sides were shaved and fitted with 1953 Buick Riviera side trims blending into the rear fender skirts with working air scoops. Finished in Seafoam Green with Organic Green side panels, the revolutionary Hirohata Merc made an appearance in the hot rod movie, Running Wild!

This low-to-the-road rod of the future was finished with thirty coats of Pearl White lacquer and detailed with striking Kandy Cerise and Gold Leaf ribbon scallops and pinstriping. In its heyday Ala Kart made a frief appearance in Hot Rod Gang, a teenage hot-rod flick about "Crazy kids...living to a rock 'n roll beat!" And its hot bod was featured on the movie poster!
